Alexa Pagerank Case Study

I have seen blog posts lately talking about the importance of your Alexa pagerank. I guess the first question you need to ask is "What is so important about Alexa rank?". Well Alexa rank is important because many money programs still count this to determine how popular your site is. Even though most site owners understand how inaccurate Alexa really is . Right or wrong in todays competitive web scenario Alexa ranking is an important measurement for the success of a web site. Alexa is important especially if you're monetizing your blog.

Alexa collects its data from the Alexa toolbar. But only about 10% of net users actually install and use the Alexa toolbar. It has also been said that the Alexa widget will help increase your ranking. When your page loads the widget, it pings Alexa and eventually should increase your rank. It is also rumored that a Alexa redirect will help increase your rank but:

Geoffrey Mack, The Project Manager at Alexa has quoted :

…The redirect doesn’t do anything to your rank. The rank is based on one thing only: logs from toolbar usage. I should know, I am the product manager at Alexa….”

2-15-2008 Added the Alexa widget to this site. After only 2 weeks there has been no change.

3-05-2008 After 3 weeks the Alexa rank has taken a nose dive.

3-08-2008 I don't believe adding the Alexa widget to this site hurt my ranking but it obviously didn't add anything positive so I removed the widget.

3-26-2008 After removing the Alexa widget I immediatly began to get better Alexa rankings.

3-26-2008 As much as I hate to do it, because of the spyware, I have added Alexa toolbar to my browser to see the results. If you have problems installing the toolbar just do a search as it appears to be a very common issue.

4-16-2008 There has been a major change in my Alexa rankings after only about 3 weeks. It isn't a change that you will see gradually or that you can see changing daily. It will just show in the toolbar that a major change has been made.. I haven't noticed if it is set at a predetermined time or if it is dependent on the amount of visitors to the site that are using the Alexa toolbar.

5-29-2008 I have continued to use the Alexa toolbar. It can get difficult because it is always being recognize as spyware. I have had to uninstall and re-install the toolbar on a couple of occasions.
